How to Trace a Uk Mobile or Landline Telephone Number

Below are some steps you can take to gather information surrounding and trace the subscriber details (name and address) behind a given UK home phone or mobile number. This can be useful if you're receiving unwanted nuisance calls or harassing texts and need to track down who is behind it.

  1. Start looking over BT whitepages. If you're dealing with a landline number in the United Kingdom and trying to identify the owner's name and address, the first place to start is looking over BT's Whitepages. You can search by telephone number, or search for a subject with as little as a surname and city/partial post code.
  2. Identify the carrier. If you're dealing with a mobile number, the first thing to do is identify the carrier of the mobile number in question. You can do this by visiting the locator or the mobile carrier list. Knowing the carrier of the offending number is a very helpful piece of information to have if you're reporting a nuisance call to the police, and should be able to help them speed up the process of stopping the harassment.
  3. Send a text message through your email. You can also send a UK mobile number an SMS text message through your computer's e-mail address. Details on how to do this can be found here: email to sms. This can be useful if you need to contact the owner of a harassing mobile number, but do not wish to reveal your phone number.
  4. Use various search engines. Search engines are also a fantastic resource, and should you try to search for the UK mobile or landline number through various internet search engines. If google does not have a website with a mention of the offending number, it's possible that yahoo or webcrawler might.
  5. Hire an investigator. If all else fails, there are professional private investigators who specialize in the reversal of unpublished UK landline and mobile numbers. (Examples include: http://www.phonesearchcentral.co.uk & http://www.investigativeresources.co.uk/)

  1. This is how telephone credit card processing works: It is simple to use. Dial the 800 number and enter your merchant ID and your customer's credit card information (number, expiration date and amount of sale) using the keypad of your phone. After the verification of all the information and payment particulars at the other end, you will receive an approval confirmation number. Funds will accordingly be transferred to your business checking account in a couple of business days. There is no hassle of sales slips, or deposit slips. You can receive the details of all your completed transactions at the end of each month in your statement. In addition, daily sales activity can be followed anytime using your phone.

  4. Learn your alternatives. So, if you’re short on resources and cannot afford new credit card processing equipment or software right now, telephone processing is for you! It will help you make through those initial days of business set up, when sales volume is less and cash flow too is restricted. You can tap on customers who use plastic money, gradually growing your business and client base. Optimum use of telephone credit card processing is sure to prove beneficial!

How to Use Voicenet to Receive Reminders via Telephone

You set up appointments reminder in your calendar software, such as Microsoft Outlook. This works only if you remember to look at it. If you don't have a good quality voice modem or technical skills, OnCellRx.com provides a fee-based reminder service developed by a pharmacist.
A freeware program called AutoReminder is a calendar software with automatic telephone reminders. It has an Outlook-like calendar interface for setting appointments, meetings, and phone reminders. The software is widely used in medical offices for patient appointment reminders. For personal use, the free version is more than enough.

  1. Download the software program from Voicenet's website at http://www.voicent.com/download.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
  3. Open the appointment reminder software. You should see the Outlook-like calendar window.
  4. Double click on the tim- slot of your appointment. When the appointment dialog pops up, set the telephone reminder call time, phone number, and any additional text message.
  5. That's it. At the time of reminder call, the software automatically dials the phone number reminding you of the upcoming appointment. The reminder message automatically includes appointment time and text notes. The text message is automatically converted to voice by a text-to-speech engine.

How to Follow Internet Etiquette

What to do, and what not to do. A small guide to Internet etiquette.

  1. Try to write decently. Internet slang is perhaps faster to type, but it will always be harder to read. Other positive aspects with this is that your writing skills will at least be maintained, if not improved. This will help you in the future.
  2. Don't be a spelling Nazi, at least if you are in an international community. People whose first language isn’t English sometimes don’t speak or write it very well. Before you criticize, think, how is your French? Or Norwegian?
  3. Try to think before you write about how it will be perceived. When you write something on the Internet, you lack all the facial expressions, tone and body language you would otherwise use to get your point across. Smilies and emoticons are especially helpful for indicating what tone you wish your writing to be perceived with.
  4. Learn the basic rules of an Internet community before engaging in it. Nothing is more irritating than someone without a clue mucking up threads or spamming message boards.

How to Be Safe on the Internet

Using the internet and surfing the web can be as sweet as candy, but sometimes, as sweet as it is, it's very easy to type in personal info. This article is just the beginning of internet safety. Here are a few ways to stay safe during your online activities.
  1. Do not give out your full name, address, or phone number to anyone online that you don't trust and/or don't know and that don't live in the same town as you. They might not be who they claim to be, so do not trust them if they guess the actual name of the person you are chatting with. To avoid confusing your friends with strangers, make a password you must say. (for example," If you are Ashley, say our password." Then Ashley will say,"Clever one true not example example totally unweird refrigerator magnets banana apple dancing Ugg boots.") Just mix a bunch of words together and make it pretty hard to guess by a stranger. Also call your friend to make sure they are online.
  2. Never give out your bank account or credit card information unless you are shopping with a well known or highly rated online business. Check for secure transaction info. The best companies will have many security devices in place. You may see a gold lock at the bottom of the page to indicate a secure site. When giving any bank details or other information make sure the connection is secure (https) and the site is perfectly trustworthy. Not every site which runs https or accepts payments is trustworthy. Some good sites are Amazon.com, Buy.com, eBay, Barnes & Noble, iTunes, and sites owned by major shopping centers such as Wal-Mart and Best Buy.
  3. Never open e-mail attachments from strangers unless you can trust them and you have security settings on your computer. Some junk e-mails may contain viruses or spyware that can harm your computer. These e-mails may be automatically marked as "spam" or "junk".
  4. Beware of spoof email claiming to be from eBay, PayPal, or a bank or a company name you know asking for personal or sensitive information. This is called phishing. The e-mail may inform you that there is a problem with your account/password. There may be a link to click inside. Forward any of these e-mails to the company it claims to be sent from. They will confirm whether the e-mail you received was real or not. Also, bear in mind that email programs like Yahoo!, MSN, etc. will never ask you for your email password. Don't fall for it.
  5. If you decide to meet someone in person from online, go to a public place and let friends and family know your plans. Have an alternate plan if things turn out badly.
  6. Get a good anti-virus program, spyware remover, and firewall. There are free programs available online, such as avast! antivirus, Grisoft's AVG Free, Microsoft Anti-Spyware and Webroot, and Sygate personal firewall. They will block most attempts and alert you if problems are found.
  7. Read the fine print. There are many survey sites that pay you for answering questions and filling out forms. If you do not want to receive junk mail or get put on a telemarketer list, look for a small box near the bottom of the page that asks if you want to receive information and offers from other companies. The best sites will have a statement listed that they will not sell your name to other companies. Some sites require you to give all your information to get the product. Although sometimes, you may get a ton of spam. Only fill in required fields that are marked with a *. If the info box does not have an asterisk, it is optional and you can leave it blank.
  8. Monitor young children's (under 10) activities closely and use parental controls when available. Use a password a child will not guess. Install parental control software. The Internet is not child-friendly.
  9. Tell your preteens (under 13) to write down every website they go to. Also monitor them when they are signing up for a website. Also, do not let your children sign up for or any other chat sites (MySpace etc.) They are focused for an older audience so here are some recommendations for children ages 6-13. (See External links)
  10. Change your passwords every month or so. Try not to use the same password more than once at a time. Also, make your password something original such as,"arjnfeurgbvaeurig@yahoo.com." A harder way to do it is by mixing up a jumble of letters, but be aware, it might be harder to memorize, so write in on a piece of paper - keep this hidden from view (not, for example, on a note stuck to your monitor). Make it exceptionally hard to guess, especially if it has your personal information.
  11. Check the URL Always make sure the site your using is really what you think it is before you enter your details or a password For example, if you want to log into Facebook you would check to make sure the site ENDS with (what-ever).facebook.com not ".facebook-videos.com" or anything like that. usually when a site ends like that (very close to a popular website) it means that they want to try and either get your password or get your personal details.
  12. Be careful with your details Always be careful what you say on the internet, remember only say what you would be happy to say to some random person on the street, (This means on sites like twitter, facebook, bebo, myspace etc. don't say sentences like: I am going to a party at (Insert address/venue here) or My name is (Full name) stuff like that can get you into a whole lot of trouble with people you have never even met before.

Tips

  • Web services such as AOL, Yahoo, or MSN have messengers that allow you to chat with others with an instant message (IM) or private message (PM) box. Go to the preferences or options menu and carefully choose settings. It is best to turn off messages from all users and only add people to your buddy list that you know very well or someone you choose to talk to. Bad or annoying programs may invade your messenger box or chat windows, such as spam bots, boot codes, or tools. These can damage your computer and record your online activities. Always set your preferences to the highest security.
  • Other programs are available to provide even more features and can be used with your messengers. YTunnelPro and YahElite are very good and helpful companions to Yahoo Messenger.
  • If you subscribe to things, have a phony account. This will help keep you from getting spam to your regular address, and will protect your identity. A good site which allows you to create temporary email addresses on the fly is Spam Motel (see external link below). When you register on an unknown site, go to Spam Motel and create an email address and delete it when you have no further use for it.
  • If you feel uncomfortable giving away your credit card number, you can buy a prepaid credit card or use a gift credit card instead. These often work the same as a regular credit card, but they only have a set amount on them, so that if someone gets ahold of the prepaid card's number, they don't do the damage they can with a real card.
  • Some banks offer 'on-the-fly' credit cards, which you can generate yourself within 10 seconds, and you can limit the amount and the validity on them (of course they charge to your real credit card when they are used). Also, only one merchant can ever use them. That way, even a stolen card number is useless to the thief, and the maximum damage is severly limited. Make one for every internet buy; that is a very good security mechanism.
  • If you`re using firefox, download the extensions WOT, which tells you how trustworthy sites are, and NoScript, which denies Javascript and other potentially malicious add-ons except on trusted sites.
  • When shopping online, take advantage of one-time-use virtual credit card numbers.
  • Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox are considered to be safer web browsers on the internet

Warnings

  • Be careful what you say on the internet and understand that it is becoming common practice for employers to research what you have said online as part of the hiring process. What you say today could keep you from getting hired to your dream job five years from now.
  • If you really have to say something you shouldn't, don't use your real name, use a pseudonym and not your normal PC.
  • If you mention that you had a birthday recently, don't be specific about the date, or your exact age. These two items are enough to figure out your date of birth, a piece of info the banks use to help identify you.
  • Remember, people can lie as much as they want online, so be careful. If you think that you may be talking to someone who is a lot older than they say they are, look out for clues which may give them away.
  • Never arrange to meet someone in real life from the internet. (Not unless you're sure it's someone you know, then that's an exception.) It is highly risky and dangerous. Everything you have and know is at risk. Be careful, young ones...
  • Public figures are safer to meet from the Internet as they will have an official email associated with them - e.g. john@john-doe.com, rather than mynameisjohn@hotmail.co.uk. They also have legitimate sites too, so you can be a bit more trusting, but still be careful.
  • Be careful of what you download. If it's not open source/GNU, then make sure it's from a reputable site (widgets.yahoo.com, cNet's Download.com, etc.)*
  • When using P2P software such as Limewire, only download music and age appropriate video. Anything else could be filled with viruses and who knows what.
  • Never send anyone you met on the internet any money. No matter what sob story they may tell you.
  • Don't look at pornography. Most pornographic sites contain malware of some kind, and a trip to such a site is analogous to its real life counterpart in the unwanted side effects that may spring up.
However, the sole exception to this are sites like Playboy and FHM.com, which are legitimate companies, and at the less raunchy end of the scale.
  • Don't annoy your kids. Between the ages of 9 to 14, they will not want you checking up in their every move. Monitor them? But trust them enough that you don't have to breathe down their neck.
  • If you can, abbreviate you last name if you are using an untrusted site

How to Maximize the Speed of Your Internet Connection

This article describes how to speed up your Internet connection without use of web accelerators, and is geared towards Windows and Internet Explorer.
  1. Do some basic maintenance on your PC. Run Disk Defrag, a scan disk, a virus scan, a malware scan, and clear your recycle bin. An unusually slow Internet connection experience is often the only sign that your computer is infected with viruses or other malware. Delete old files and temporary files. Never allow the free space on your C: drive to be less than 10% of the total size or twice the installed RAM (which ever is larger). A well maintained PC will operate much better than a PC that has never had any maintenance. Google or your local computer repair store should be able to help you with this if you don't know how. Or you can use a Reg Cleaner and PC optimizer tool here at Intel Software Partner link.
  2. Reset Your Home Network. Sometimes restarting your home network or your router if you have one will drastically increase the speed of your connection.
  3. Check your home network equipment in general. If you have multiple computers sharing a connection, make sure all the computers are physically connected to a router or switch, and not just to a hub. Hubs are "dumb" low-level equipment, while routers are capable of prioritizing and directing traffic effectively.
  4. Optimize your cache or temporary Internet files. These files improve your Internet connection performance by not downloading the same file over and over. When a web site puts their logo graphic on every page your computer only downloads it when it changes. If you delete the temporary files it must be downloaded again. if you disable the cache, it must be downloaded every time you view a page that uses it. This can be done by opening Internet Explorer, clicking on "Tools" at the top and choosing "Internet Options". On the General tab, click the "Settings" button next to Temporary Internet Files. Set Check for newer versions to "Automatically". Set amount of disk space to use to 2% of your total disk size or 512 MB, which ever is smaller. On Firefox, click "Tools" then "Options," and go to the privacy tab. Then click on the Cache tab within this.
  5. Never bypass your router. Most routers include a firewall that is very difficult for hackers to defeat. If you don't need to use Wireless then hook your computer directly to your router. Routers will only slow down your connection by a few Milli-seconds. You won't notice the difference but the hackers will.
  6. If you are using a Wireless router, make sure it doesn't conflict with a cordless phone or wireless camera. Wireless routers come in two varieties; 802.11bg (2.4Ghz) or 802.11a (5.8Ghz) If you are using a 2.4Ghz Cordless phone and 2.4Ghz Wireless router then your Internet connection speed will slow while you use the cordless phone. The same is true of wireless security cameras. Check on your phone and camera, if it's 900Mhz then it's fine. If it says 2.4Ghz or 5.8Ghz then it could be the cause of your slow connection speed while they're in use.
  7. Call your Internet service provider (ISP). Sometimes you just have bad service. They can usually tell if your connection is substandard without having a technician come to your home. Just be nice and ask.
  8. Upgrade your computer. If your computer is slow, it doesn't matter how fast your Internet connection is, the whole thing will just seem slow. You can only access the Internet as fast as your PC will allow you to.
  9. Upgrade your router/firewall equipment. Specifically look into any speed specifications (many older routers are not capable of transmitting to/from the internet faster than 10 Mbps, even though the local ports transmit in 100 Mbps. Also, older routers may be underpowered, so that even though the theoretical speed is 10 Mbps, the processor on the router is too weak to reach maximum speed.
  10. Upgrade your router firmware. Check the manufacturer's web site for firmware downloads for your router. Compare this with your version, and upgrade if necessary. Most routers have web interfaces for managing this, check for any labels on your router specifying default adress, username and password.
  11. Replace your old cable modem. Any solid-state electronics will degrade over time due to accumulated heat damage. Your broadband modem will have a harder and harder time 'concentrating' on maintaining a good connection as it gets older (signal to noise ratios will go down, and the number of resend requests for the same packet will go up). An after-market cable modem as opposed to a cable-company modem will frequently offer a better connection.
  12. Often your connection speed is slow because other programs are using it. To test if other programs are accessing the Internet without your knowing, Click Start, Click Run. Type "cmd" (without quotes). Type "netstat -b 5 > activity.txt". After a minute or so, hold down Ctrl and press C. This has created a file with a list of all programs using your Internet connection. Type activity.txt to open the file and view the program list. Ctrl Alt Delete and open up the Task Manager. Go to the process menu and delete those processes that are stealing your valuable bandwidth. (NOTE: Deleting processes may cause certain programs to not function properly)
  13. After you have tried all this try your connection again and see if it's running any faster.
  14. Check to see somebody else is using the internet on your home network. If somebody is downloading a lot of media from the internet, such a watching video or downloading large files, the host computer is using a lot of bandwidth and the other computers are using the remaining bandwidth.
  15. If you are using satelite internet, your internet connection might be altered because of wind, heavy snow, or rain.

Tips

  • Call your ISP and have them verify all of your TCP/IP settings if you are concerned. Ask them to verify that your Proxy settings are correct.
  • Don't expect dial up or moderate speed service to be fast. The Internet is primarily geared towards Broadband Connections, which is about 512kbs or higher Sometimes, you have to wait a little.
  • Download programs that make browsing faster:

    • Loband.org is a browser inside of a browser that loads web pages without the images.
    • Firefox and Opera both have options to disable images.
    • In Firefox, you can also use extensions such as NoScript that let you block scripts and plug-ins that would otherwise slow things down a lot.
    • If you are using Internet Explorer or Firefox, try downloading Google Web Accelerator. It is meant to speed up broadband connections, but it can also slow your Internet connection. Try enabling it and disabling it and see when your Internet connection runs faster.
    • If you are using Firefox, download the Fasterfox extension and Firetune.
    • Reduce the amount of programs running that use your Internet connection (Instant Messengers, RSS Feeders, and MS Applications set to send Internet data)
    • Google Accessible Is designed to search pages in order of how clean they are of junk. This will bring up pages that are usually not only easy to read, but are quick to load.
  • Upgrade your RAM by getting more and/or faster memory. This will not only improve your regular computer use, but it will affect the speed of your Internet connection because your computer works faster.
  • Use the Stop button to stop loading pages once you've gotten what you want.
  • Some times malware on your computer can eat up your bandwidth. Make sure you have an up-to-date malware protection program.
  • Most Internet Providers have flaky DNS servers (no citation necessary, it's a given) - so, instead of using those provided by your ISP, switch your DNS servers to use those of OpenDNS. OpenDNS is far faster, and more reliable, simply using 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 as your domain name servers will speed up most flaky DNS problems (may even speed up your networking since OpenDNS has large caches).
  • Look into running your own local DNS server on your network. Some newer routers may include their own nameserver, otherwise, check into AnalogX.com's FastCache program, it works great to hold commonly accessed domain names in the "cache" so that the IP addresses do not have to be looked up everytime you navigate to a new page.

Warnings

  • Viruses and malware can often use up your bandwidth and slow down your Internet connection. Make sure you have protection against this. Many ISP's will provide software for this. Make sure your anti-virus and malware scanners are up-to-date.
  • Bypassing the router will leave you more vulnerable to attacks because you no longer have the built-in firewall from your router protecting you.
  • Watch out for scams that claim to make your Internet go a lot faster for free. They may tell you to download their program, which usually has a lot of other hidden programs attached that might steal your identity or in other ways harm your computer and/or others on your local network.

How to Start a Team Blog

Team blogs are a good way to spread new ideas and get a bigger "regular" audience for your thoughts. They can also be a discussion forum for new suggestions. What do you have to consider before starting one?

  1. Think of what purpose the blog is going to serve. Idea exchanging, talking about the world situation or what? Plus, what's the blog's subject?
  2. Choose a blogging platform. Are you planning to go online big time or is a free service enough? What features does the blog require: categories, Trackback, comment moderating? Blogsome.com and Blogger.com are some free platforms that will get your team blog started (Blogger doesn't offer categories, though.)
  3. Decide the blogging guidelines, especially if you're working/studying inside some institution: you shouldn't write about people's private lives or some corporate secrets, for example.
  4. How are you going to handle commenting: is everyone able to comment, are you going to check them before showing them? Comment moderation might be a good thing if the subject is a sensitive one.
  5. Create some categories, ask some members to join and start blogging! It's really fun when you get used to it.

Tips

  • It might be a good idea to give some advice to the bloggers of how to use the service: for example Wordpress's (which Blogsome.com uses) posting page might confuse some people that haven't been that much into blogging/HTML before.
  • Make a deal of how often people should collaborate in the blog: if one day you realize you're doing all the writing yourself, maybe it's time to think to get some new members to join and kick some members out. Of course you should discuss things beforehand.

Warnings

  • Don't listen to people who whine about you censoring their comments: it's your blog after all! If they still keep groaning, tell them to start their own blog where they can say whatever they want.

How to Monetize Your Blog

Blogging has become an extremely popular way of expressing ourselves and spreading information. It could even earn you a hefty paycheck. But how do you make that happen? This article explains it all!

  1. Content is key. The top priority should be creating content that is worth reading. If you write blog posts that are worth reading people will come back to your blog over and over. You will be able to build a following, so that when you have something to say there will actually be people who read it. Choose a blog topic you enjoy and focus in on that topic. Do not write a financial blog one day and a cooking blog the next. Hone in on different aspects of your main topic. For example, blog about online business. It’s a subject people are interested in because everyone wants to make money and also there are a great number of subtopics within online business.
  2. Spread the word about your blog. If you are simply making blog posts and nothing else, you are not doing enough. So what can you do?
    • Submit your blog to search engines.
    • Post Twitter messages about your blog updates.
    • Join blog directories that will catalog your blog. Blog Catalog and My Blog Log are both great blog directories that can connect you with other bloggers who share similar interest. Within such blog directories you will be able to join communities and add contacts, which will allow your blog more exposure.
  3. Monetize your blog. If you are attracting followers and getting decent web traffic for your blog, but making no money, then you are wasting an opportunity. With a captive audience reading your blog there is an opportunity to place ads and affiliate links, which relate to your blog subject. For example, if you write a dating tips blog you could place an affiliate link to Match.com. You are providing people the service of giving them a quality reference. If they visit and make a purchase then you will receive a cut of the profits. Google Adsense allows you to place ads that are related to the subject matter of your blog. Utilize these tools to start creating income as you blog.
  4. Do something every day. Persistence and effort are necessary if you wish to make a substantial income as a blogger. Generating adequate traffic takes time and requires you to place your blog link all over the web. Link exchanges, comment posts, message forums, and article writing can all be used as ways to place a link back to your blog. If you take the time to do something each day with the purpose of promoting your blog, eventually you will have made something that can generate income.

Tips

  • Blogging is a great way to express yourself and share ideas with others. Most people are casual bloggers who will never make a dime from their posts. You can be different with a bit of extra effort and persistence. Good luck.

How to Post wikiHow Articles on Your Blog or Website

It is easy to share wikiHow's content on almost any blog or website. If your site uses HTML, you can easily post any article you like using wikiHow's republishing tool. Just follow these simple steps to post wikiHow articles to Blogger, LiveJournal, MySpace, or other blog or web page.

  1. Go to the Special:Republish page by clicking on the link that says "Blog this! Republish this entire article on your blog or website" at the bottom of the article you wish to post. This will take you to a special page that contains all of the HTML code to post the article to your blog and website as well as some links to popular blogging platforms.
  2. Copy all of the HTML code in the box by doing the following:
    • Windows: Click your mouse once in the box with the HTML. Hit CTRL-A to select all the code, then CTRL-C to copy it.
    • Macintosh: Click your mouse once in the box with the HTML. Hit Apple-A to select all the code, then Apple-C to copy it.

  3. Open your blog or web page for editing.
  4. Paste all of the code into your blog. Be sure that your blog is in a mode that accepts HTML. Many blogging services use their own custom editors by default and will need to have HTML editing selected. See the tips below for how to do this on common blogging platforms. The image below shows how this looks on Blogger.

  5. Save your post.

How to Prevent Infection During Pregnancy

These 10 tips can help prevent infections that can harm your baby. Not always know if you have an infection and sometimes even feel bad. If you believe you have an infection or at risk of contracting a visit to your doctor.
      • Wash your hands often with soap and water after you do the following:
      • Use the bathroom
      • Play raw meats, raw eggs or dirty plant
      • Prepare and eat foods
      • Makes gardening or touches the ground or soil
      • You are in contact with pets
      • It is close to sick people
      • Play saliva (sputum) with your hands
      • Take care of children or play with them
      • Change diapers
  1. If you do not have soap and water, you can clean your hands with a gel-based hand alcohol.
  2. Try not share cutlery, glasses and food with young children. Wash your hands when you are in continued contact with children. Saliva and urine of them may contain a virus. This virus probably will not hurt the children, but can be dangerous for you and the baby is born.
  3. Prepare the meat until just cooked. Meat juices should be clear and the meat should not be red on the inside. Do not eat hot dogs (hot dogs), cold cuts or deli meats, unless they are heated to high temperatures. These little cooked and processed meats may contain harmful bacteria.
  4. Avoid consuming unpasteurized milk (raw) and food derived from it. Do not eat soft cheeses such as feta and brie, or cheese, unless the labels say they have been pasteurized. Non-pasteurized products may contain harmful bacteria.
  5. Do not touch or clean the dirty litter box for cats. Ask someone to do so. If you have to change the litter box, make sure to wear gloves and wash their hands after doing so. The boxes of dirty sand may have harmful parasites.
  6. Stay away from domestic or wild rodents and their droppings. Hire a professional exterminator to eliminate harmful insects and rodents in and outside the home. If you have a pet rodent, in the case of a hamster or a guinea pig of India, ask someone else to take care until the baby is born. Some rodents can carry harmful viruses.
  7. Become testing sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV and hepatitis B, and protect against these diseases. Some people who have HIV, hepatitis B or an STD do not feel sick. It is important to know if you have one of these diseases. Should one of these diseases, talk to your doctor about ways to reduce the possibility that the disease affects her baby.
  8. Talk to your doctor about vaccinations (shots). There are vaccines that are recommended before pregnancy, during or just after the baby is born. Apply appropriate vaccines at the right time can help you stay healthy and keep your baby is sick or having health problems for life.
  9. Avoid contact with people who have infections. Stay away from people with infections such as chickenpox or rubella, if you have not yet had the disease or were not vaccinated against these before pregnancy.
  10. Ask your doctor about the group B streptococcus Nearly 1 in 4 women carry this type of bacteria, but do not feel bad. A simple test is to take a sample from the vagina and rectum with a swab, towards the end of the pregnancy will reveal whether you have this type of bacteria. If you have group B strep, talk to your doctor about how to protect your baby during birth.
  11. This is not a complete guide to a healthy pregnancy. Ask your doctor for more information on how to prepare food properly, use insect repellent when outdoors, the best way to take your medicines and other important issues.

How to Deal With Teen Pregnancy

Pregnancy is sometimes unplanned, especially the younger we are. Our bodies are made in such a way, that you can get pregnant as a teenager. This is a time in our lives when we are emotionally and financially needing support to deal with having a child. Be brave, you have a challenge ahead of you.
If you are a pregnant teen, and made a mistake, here are some ways to help you with your pregnancy.
  1. When you first discover you are pregnant, you should tell someone that you trust and who will support you.
  2. Telling your parents about the pregnancy can be a difficult thing to do, especially if they didn't know you were sexually active. Figure out the best way to do this (see external link).
  3. Support:If both or one of your parents support you, that is wonderful, as they have experience and can guide you through parenting. If the father of your baby supports you, that, too, could be wonderful, as he could willingly help you by taking you to appointments, paying for baby stuff, being emotionally supportive, and so much more. If you don't find support, tell people you trust until you find people who will support you. If no one knows or supports you, you could be going through this alone.
  4. Apply for Medicaid and WIC to cover your medical expenses, food and living expenses if necessary. Oftentimes, there is support for young women, and it can help you to find jobs, finish high school, and go to a vocational school or college.
  5. Take a parenting course (see external link).
  6. Find a place to stay. If your parents don't support you, or are giving you an ultimatum to do their wishes or move, and your boyfriend is not supportive, see if you can find a relative, friend, or anyone who has your best interests. If you don't have support from friends or family, seek help from the state.
  7. Get advice. If you're afraid of having a baby, consult an elder, nurse, doctor or midwife. Ask them what to expect.
  8. Save money.Be thrifty in what you buy. There are oftentimes places where you can buy stuff for you and your baby very cheaply, such as yard sales and thrift stores.

Tips

  • If your boyfriend is abusive you should ask him to get counseling. If he is not willing to do so, you may need to remove yourself and your baby away from him.
  • Consider and keep your options open, such as adoption. Look at the pros and cons of each choice and choose the one that's right for you, such as your finacial situation and support circle. If you choose not to get an abortion, then keep adoption open. You may realize throughout the pregnancy that you can't support a child or your parents don't support your decision. Life can throw unexpected things at you. Just have a back-up plan.
  • Check MySpace, yahoo and other groups, there are young mother support groups online.
  • If the father doesn't want to be involved, you can still collect child support.
  • If your parents are forcing you to choose an option you aren't comfortable with, consider becoming emancipated.

Warnings

  • When a baby is left alone or is left without his mother for a long time, a baby will go through three stages: protest, despair, and detachment. (See online parenting class, Chapter 3: Separation)
  • This is just a theory put forward by the developmental psychologist John Bowlby. Theory is an important word here as it means that it has not been definitively proven to be the case. Although the theory had a lot of support in the 1950s, Bowlby's research had many flaws in that it relied on retrospective evidence, did not consider the degree of separation, and did not consider the differences between privation and deprivation. Therefore there is good reason to hae a certain ammount of doubt about this theory.

How to Go Through a Pregnancy Smoothly

Congratulations! You've now stepped from preconception to pregnancy. The next 38 to 40 weeks may be a challenge, but producing a healthy baby at the end is well worth it. Having a significant other, family, or friends by your side will motivate and keep you in a positive world through the worst days.
  1. Get prenatal care as soon as possible. Early prenatal care is essential for good health during your pregnancy. It can help prevent fetal compromise from undetected problems such as diabetes and RH immunizations. Late prenatal care is resulted in blood tests, such as Hepatitis B and different immune tests. It is advisable to get prenatal vitamins as soon as you know that you're pregnant and keep all of your appointments with your doctor. Take your significant other or someone close with you to ultrasounds.
  2. Alert your boss when you feel comfortable announcing the pregnancy. Letting them know that you are pregnant, not only deters you from lifting things, but also advises them to allow time for labor and maternity leave. It is illegal for them to ask if you are pregnant, and also illegal for them to fire you or lay you off due to your pregnancy.

  3. Eat healthy for the two of you. Pregnant women need a lot more nutrients than non-pregnant women, which means a bigger proportion of fruits and vegetables. The caffeine intake should not be more than 300 mg (milligrams) a day; some professionals say that you should avoid caffeine as much as you can. Trade your cravings for healthier items. Instead of potato chips, eat carrot sticks. Try chocolate cereal with skim milk instead of chocolate candy. Drink non caffeine drinks, such as Fanta, 7up, or juice. Remember to get your 7 to 8 glasses of water.
  4. Keep crackers or gum near you. Believe it or not, chewing gum helps stomach acid and lowers the amount of morning sickness. If you do start to feel nausea waves, eat a few soda or animal crackers.
  5. Keep active, but know your limits. For this part in your life, you're not Super-Woman. Don't lift more than your doctor or OBGYN advises. Wear fitted clothes, as you will gain throughout the months. Avoid saunas and hot spas during your pregnancy. Don't be on your feet for prolonged periods of time -- relax and take deep breaths.

  6. Don't be ashamed of preparing early! Window shopping and tossing out ideas are great ice breakers to get you in the spirit when the time comes for purchasing. If you wish to go cheap, search Craigslist.com, Walmart, or local garage sales. You can purchase many items used, however, it is best to purchase a new crib and car seat. If you do purchase a used crib make sure all of the hardware is present and in good condition, you should also verify that the crib meets the current national safety standards, check with the National Safety Council. If you decide to purchase a used car seat, you should also inspect its quality carefully, look for signs of wear on the straps or stress cracks then make sure to check with the National Highway Traffic & Safety Association (NHTSA). Write down the car seat manufacturer, model number and serial number and call the NHTSA Hotline to confirm that this particular model and serial number has not been recalled. Many local organizations will provide car seats to you at a reduced rate if you can't afford a new one, check with your doctor or local community center.
  7. Be more confident with information. Go to libraries, thrift book stores, or ask for pamphlets on pregnancy, labor, and caring of infants. Sign up for classes within a local hospital, which may be free or have a small fee (depending how long the sessions go for, etc).
  8. Get ready for the unexpected. Your may go into labor any time between 38 to 42 weeks and it may happen at the most unexpected times and places. Prepare a plan for how to get to the hospital. Pack a bag for you and your baby ahead of time too, make sure to include any items you and the baby will need. Don't forget the camera! You should also install your car seat ahead of time, hospitals will not release you unless you have a properly installed car seat.

Tips

  • Getting close to your significant other can be defined as granted massages -- feet and back massages are heaven during your pregnancy!
  • Go all the way and start a pregnancy scrapbook. Include all ultrasound pictures that you receive, log down how you felt through the months, what you craved, pictures of your stomach (against a wall or a mirror image), and people's sayings or reactions about the pregnancy.

Warnings

  • Watch out for Toxoplasmosis from cats' feces. You don't need to avoid or get rid of cats, but just be extra alert while either cleaning a litter box or being around it.
  • Also watch for different chemicals as the months go by, for example Chlorine and bleach products.

    How to Pet a Cat

Petting a cat may sound simple, but people who've never spent much time around cats and children should know the do's and don'ts of approaching and touching a cat. Using too much force or speed, or petting it in the wrong spot can agitate some cats, causing him/her to bite or scratch. A good general guideline is to consider how you would prefer to have a stranger approach you and touch you. If you can make clear to the cat that you are seeking permission to touch it, and that the cat ultimately has control over the interaction, you're much less likely to instigate a negative response from the cat.

    1. Let the cat sniff you before you pet him/her, so he/she can become comfortable with you. Extend a hand or finger, and allow the cat a chance to touch its nose to your finger(s). If it shows no interest in your hand, or just stares at it suspiciously, reconsider your intention to pet it. Maybe try some other time when the cat may be in a better mood. Some cats just aren't friendly. However, if the cat sniffs your hand and then rubs its chin or the side of its head against it, or brushes the side of its body on you, chances are he/she is open to being petted.
    2. Pet his/her head lightly with your fingers. Focus on the area between or behind the ears. Use the pads of your fingers and apply gentle pressure. While some cats may like to be scratched, it's not a good idea to try it when you're not familiar with cats in general. You might scratch too hard or too fast. Some cats will get fussy if you scratch them in a way they're not used to. It's very hard, however, to go wrong with petting with your fingers. The only other thing to remember is to go from front to back only.
      • While some cats thoroughly enjoy being petted under the chin, others get a little fussy when strangers try.
    3. Run the palm of your hand smoothly from the neck and along the back, all the way until you get to the tail, then begin again. Apply gentle pressure and make it a continuous, slow motion. Don't touch the tail, or move your hand along to the side. If the cat likes what you're doing, it'll arch its back to add more pressure to your hand. When you bring your hand back to where you started, the cat may rub its forehead firmly against your hand to encourage you to do it again. If the cat puts its ears back or cowers away from your hand, or just walks away, stop petting it.
      • Keep your petting from the head to the tail, and don't switch directions. Don't pat, either. Some cats enjoy it, but some don't, and if you're not used to being around cats, you're better off not experimenting unless you want to risk getting bitten or scratched.
      • You can scratch gently as your bring your hand down along the cat's back, but don't stop at one spot and scratch there. Keep your hand moving. There are cats that like getting scratched right by the tail, but some have a habit of suddenly snapping their teeth at your hand when they've had enough.
    4. Stay away from the tummy. When cats are relaxed, they might roll onto their back. Don't always take this as an invitation to rub their tummy, as many cats don't like that at all. Some cats do like it, but they interpret it as an invitation to play. They'll wrap their claws around your hand, bite it, and scratch at it vigorously with their back paws. This is not always an attack; it's how some cats "wrestle". It's not something you ever want to try, though, if you're not comfortable with cats... or you don't want to risk getting your skin bitten of scratched.

    Tips

    • Some cats meow when they want you to stop, and some meow when they want you to pet harder. Generally, it's a good idea to stop, just in case.
    • Purring is not always an indication that a cat is happy, so don't make the mistake of thinking that a purring cat will not snap or bite. Many believe purring to be an indication that a cat is communicating "pay attention to this" and it might be because the cat is happy, but it may also indicate that the cat is annoyed.

    Warnings

    • if you are wounded due to a serious bite or scratch, wash the affected area thoroughly with an antibacterial soap and apply an antiseptic such as Bacitracin, then seek medical assistance. Deep puncture wounds need medical attention because of the risk of serious infection.
    • Children should be closely supervised when petting a cat. They can easily agitate it, causing the cat to bite or scratch. Cats that are friendly to adults are not always friendly to children. Be especially careful that children do not get their face too close a cat.

How to Find the Right Pet

Are you looking for a special pet that is perfect for you? Here are tips to help you find your ideal pet.

    1. Browse a variety of humane societies, animal shelters, breed rescue groups, and legitimate adoption sites. You will find many choices -- dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, fish, and rodents and other "pocket pets." If you find a pet that appeals to you, meets your needs, and fits your lifestyle, ask the humane society or rescue group to let you handle the animal if possible.
    2. Consider differences between pets.
      • Dogs are one of the most popular pets. Dogs are very intelligent and make good companions. When choosing a dog be sure to select one that fits your lifestyle. If you live in an apartment, choose a smaller breed. Remember, large dogs need lots of outdoor space to get the proper exercise. Be prepared to take your dog for walks and to devote time to his care. Dogs also require training. Paper training, crating, and understanding and acceptance of certain household rules are vital if they are to be welcome pets.
      • Cats make terrific pets too, and currently are the most popular pet in the United States, if you go by overall numbers. Cats have the advantage of usually not requiring potty training -- just point them to the cat box and they'll usually do the rest, if you keep the box clean. While cats don't need as much strenuous exercise and don't need to be walked, they do need enough room to explore and stake out territory. They love to climb and investigate hiding spots. Cats can scratch furniture and other household items unless you provide appropriate scratching posts and encourage their use. Unlike popular belief, cats do become bored and lonely if left alone for long periods. If you have room, consider two cats if you must be away from home all day.
      • Animals like gerbils, ferrets and mice also make great pets, but one must remember that they need stimulation as well. Many rodents work well with same-sex (generally female) pairs. If you're thinking about getting a rabbit, make sure you don't let 2 adult male rabbits come in contact with each other. They will likely fight.

    Tips

    • Consider adopting a pet from a humane society or animal shelter before searching pet shops. By adopting from a shelter, you can help an animal in need, and find a loving pet to with which to share your life. Three to four MILLION animals are euthanized annually because of irresponsible pet owners, backyard breeders, pet shops, and so forth. Save a life.
    • If you can't decide on the perfect pet after looking through several places, ask a friend if you can care for his or her pet for a time. Some first-hand experience with an animal may help you make a decision.
    • If you like animals, but live in a home or apartment that restricts pets, get a job as a dog walker or offer to care for friends' pets while they are away on business trips or on vacation.
    • Check Pet Finders, 1-800-Save-A-Pet, and PetHarbor for pets that are available to be adopted. You can also search Google for a listing of your local animal shelters and rescue groups.
    • You can find purebred dogs at your local animal shelter, however, you can also Google the desired breed + "rescue" to find local purebred rescue sites, and adopt a pet that way. Shelter animals usually aren't there for misconduct. Many times, people decide they cannot handle the responsibility, or are moving, or have lost their jobs and can no longer care for their pets. The pets of people who have passed away often end up in shelters as well.
    • If you want a pet that requires no care, try a pet rock. Living pets require your time, energy, and patience, and will need regular expenditures for food, health care, treats, and toys.

    Warnings

    • You or someone in your family may be allergic to some animals. Spend time with the pet before you make a commitment. Make sure all family members who will come in regular contact with the pet do as well.
    • You don't want your pet to sit at home alone all day. You need time to properly care for any animal.

How to Have a Party With Your Pet Rock

If you'd like to play party time with your pet rocks, here are some suggestions. Whether it's your rock's birthday, a rocky Christmas or just a day when you imagine that your rock is in the mood to rave, here's a guide on how to throw the perfect party for your pet rock!

    1. Set up a space for your party. Preferably a dollhouse or corner. Take out most of the furniture in the house. (a bed and sofa, tv and stereo you can keep) Pet rocks can't party when they're not in the mood for it.
    2. Make a guest list and invite your friends pet rocks. Make sure they are the same gender of your rock, and only invite the nice pet rocks, the hard-partying pet rocks, the popular pet rocks, and the cool pet rocks.
    3. Make party hats and balloons. You can make party hats by taking a small piece of paper (1 inch long, and 2 inches tall) and roll it up into a cone. When it is almost rolled up, put tape on the sides so that the cone stays. Color the party hats in decorative and festive colors. Make holes on the sides and put string through. At the party, the guests tie their own hats.
    4. Make balloons by blowing up a balloon, popping the balloon, use the small pieces to cut into smaller pieces, and roll it up into a shape of the balloon.
    5. Put on rock or pop music. Usually, music by Bratz will be good for the party becuase its happy and fun to dance to, and so are songs like "Buttons" by Pussycat Dolls and "Pon De Replay"
    6. Have fun and party until the night is over.

    Tips

    • Have fun and party!
    • If your own friends have pet rocks, you can invite them and their pet rocks too.
    • Don't play boring music! It will make the party dreary and boring.

    Warnings

    • It can be dangerous if you stay up too late!
    • Don't throw any rocks. If thrown hard enough, your rock could break, or you sever the bonds you share with him/her. Not only that, but you or something around you could break, or someone could get hurt!

How to Book Your First Holiday Abroad Without Your Parents

This is to help any young-adults out with booking their first holiday abroad without any adult supervision. Rather than get scammed by travel agents because you are young, or end up in a hole in the Costa Del Sol because it was cheap... Read through this guide to booking a holiday and ensuring you have a great time!
    1. Decide who is going on this holiday. Is it just you and a friend or a few of you from school/college/work?
    2. What kind of holiday are you all after? Is it a celebration because your all leaving school? a chill out week on a beach? clubbing until the sunrise? or seeing some traditional places on a Greek island perhaps?
    3. Look at locations. Browse the web for various travel deals.
    4. Make sure to answer the following questions before booking a trip:
      • What dates are you able to all go on?
      • Do you want to go for one week or two?
      • Which airports are best for you to ALL fly from?
      • What is everyone’s budget?
    5. Go into a travel agent on the high street, or do a search online, and check for availability on the dates you and your party have selected, from your chosen airport, to your chosen destination.
    6. If the prices are higher than you thought, remember with the recent increase in fuel prices all tour operators have to charge an additional fuel price.
    7. If you get a costing from a travel agent, ask to see the breakdown, then you will know exactly what you are paying for.
    8. To save money, take off the resort transfers, flight meals and extra luggage allowance.
    9. Also if you are in a big group, don't think that it is essential to stay in a hotel on the main strip, as more often than not these hotels are very noisy and you will get no peace. Check out hotels a few minutes, walk from the nightlife, because then you will have the best of both worlds, and also get to see more of the resort you are staying in.
    10. Ask travel agents about group discounts. If there is 3 in a room it should work out cheaper.
    11. If it is just you and a friend traveling, ask about low season deals.
    12. When you agree a price and pay a deposit, ensure you know exactly what’s included in the price and what isn’t. Do you have travel insurance?
    13. Also, when do you have to pay the final balance? how do you do that? Over the phone, in the shop etc.
    14. When your holiday is booked, do some research on the internet so you know all the local information, the currency they use in the resort, how long it will take to get from the airport to the resort etc.
    15. Ensure you plan in advance, your holiday money as you can always bring it back with you if you don’t spend it all! Travelers Cheque’s are still the safest way of taking money abroad, and a lot of people will advise you to get the Travelers Cheque card that you can use abroad but be aware these are still very new and in a lot of resorts, especially Greece - not widely accepted.
    16. To get the most out of your holiday, pick up a brochure and take it with you, then you have all the details you could ever need to hand including all the booking terms and conditions.

    Tips

    • As soon as you arrive in your resort a representative will meet you at the airport. They will advise you of a welcome meeting which will be essential to ensure you make the most out of your holiday. Not only will they tell you about the hotel and the resort but also about the variety of trips on offer. These will range from beach parties, water sports, cruises, clubbing nights, festivals, foam parties to spa and shopping days! You can trust that if you book trips through your holiday rep that you will get VFM and it will be a genuine event. A lot of resorts in Spain and Greece have young Brits stood on the strip, beach and driving around of scooters offering you discounted event tickets. Please be careful - would you just hand your money over to a stranger in the street in the UK?
    • Always take a bank card with you as a back up just in case something unforeseen occurs while you are abroad i.e. lost passport etc.
    • Read your notice board in your hotel as it will have lots of information on it that you will find useful including the reps duty hours in your accommodation.

    Warnings

    • Don't forget to be sure you have got travel insurance!
    • Always ask your rep if you have any problems or questions. It is their job to help you!
    • Take plenty of money (you don't need to spend it all!)
    • Use Travelers Cheques and if you can take a cash / bank card.
    • Check you have your passport and it is in date before you book
    • Don't trust a good looking random that approaches you on the beach etc trying to sell you something - just politely say no or tell them you have already booked trips through your rep.
    • If you are sending postcards home do it on the first day otherwise sign it off "merry Christmas!"
    • Make sure you get a safe box in your room and put all your valuables in it
    • Never go onto your balcony after you have been out drinking
    • Take note of all the pools depth markings and no diving signs
    • Drink plenty of bottled water
    • Use high factor suncream

    • If you are going to be alone for Christmas, consider collaborating with others who may be alone.
    • Find out about a local homeless shelter or other charity and volunteer. This provides you with companionship during the holidays and is a wonderful way to spread joy in the Christmas season.

    Warnings

    • Your phone bill might increase.
    • It may cost a lot for Christmas dinner, the tree and the presents.
    • Don't make too much of a mess of the decorations, because at some point, you will have to clean it up.
